Strength Ecosystems

Strengths don’t exist in isolation; they form an interconnected ecosystem where each influences the others and together they create impact (or otherwise).

Strengths Are a Symbiotic System

The biological “holobiont” concept shows that disrupting one part of a symbiotic system affects the rest of the network. This insight can potentially fast track not only the development of multiple strengths but also overcoming gaps.
To elaborate, let’s look at individual strengths and how they exist in delicate balance:
  • Strategic thinking feeds your creativity, which enhances your problem-solving
  • Empathy strengthens your leadership, which improves your collaboration
  • Focus enables your analytical skills, which sharpen your decision-making

The Interconnected Nature of Strengths

This interconnectedness means that overusing or underusing a strength can disrupt multiple other strengths or the entire strength ecosystem. It also means that developing a complementary strength might enhance multiple other existing strengths. As we can see, the relationships between your strengths matters as much as each of your individual strengths alone.
The most effective approach is, therefore, to maintain a diverse strength portfolio with mutually reinforcing capabilities. This is based on the understanding that effect or impact comes not from maximising individual strengths but from cultivating a balanced personal portfolio or enterprise ecosystem of interconnected strengths.

Build a Balanced Strength Portfolio

This perspective invites a more holistic approach to strength development, one that is focused not just on individual capabilities but also on their relationships and interdependencies.
Therefore, the question becomes not just “How can I develop this strength?” but “How will enhancing this strength or capability affect my entire strength ecosystem?”
