Purpose fuels our resilience, fosters our emotional stability and provides the foundations for our wellbeing.
A sense of purpose evolves through a developmental process that involves both internal and external dimensions. The journey towards purpose is not straightforward, here is a conceptual perspective of how we develop in our sense of purpose, although there are usually ups and downs, twists and turns along the way.
- Externally Imposed Purpose – Purpose is derived primarily from external expectations, rules or demands with limited personal engagement or understanding.
- Externally Influenced Purpose – Purpose is shaped by social norms and external influences but begins to be internalised, with some personal engagement and reflection.
- Internally Constructed Purpose – Purpose is primarily derived from personal values, interests, and reflections with a clear understanding of one’s goals and motivations.
- Integrative and Transcendent Purpose – Purpose is not only personally meaningful but also orientated toward higher values and broader, altruistic goals, encompassing a concern for others and the world.
The pursuit of purpose fosters personal growth and ultimately leads to greater fulfilment, wisdom and motivation. It provides depth and meaning to our life.
